Kine A week told you “The brand new sturdy ‘crooks slide out’ is actually peopled with a colourful variety away from vital and you may arresting characters, and they, skilfully controlled of the author and you can manager, allow the movie to help you tread liquids effectively. It is only to the find yourself that it starts to break down, but the smack-right up finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can wisely dialogued, it has zero high problem within the living off its very unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie motions on an instant rate, the latest dialogue is advanced and you may characterisations generally productive. Penis Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes head the brand new cast professionally, once the investigator is actually enjoyed big aplomb of the that individual identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody in the The fresh new Yorker detailed “It terse and taut flick noir try predicated on the fresh new close and elite group conflicts of identity profile, the fresh unlawful mastermind (played by Dick Powell) behind a trendy illegal casino. The film’s blogger and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal bet, between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) has worked at the gambling enterprise and old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic script, the cast’s suavely controlled body language out of like and you may danger, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will smartly cocky pictures (together with his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet detail by detail spectacle a low profile vintage of one’s category.” [ ten ]

Photo keeps action and you can anticipation, and you may specific small meets out-of humor to add style. Expert activities from the Penis Powell, just like the a betting family overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, due to the fact an authorities inspector, in addition to up the score . As the spot comes after a common development, the newest characterizations are new and the shows suitable in order to overbalance. Dialogue are terse and relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney contact. Unusual digital camera bases come-along occasionally to escalate appeal and you can briefly stop the attention. Strong teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing while the movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand-new writer and you will representative music producer, in addition to helps with making it a softer creation.” [ 11 ]

It is generally a matter of watching Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably while a massive throw away from stars and stars bring your regular assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable nothing woman whom brings forth this new finest in him and you may Ellen Drew is the sleek and you can slinky vixen exactly who gets him toward jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily since the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a separate in a position concert tour because an exhausted police inspector just who ultimately shuts the fact. A great amount of drinking and smoking is carried out by all of the worried.” [ several ]
